Welcome to Lancaster RC Youth Service Website
Lent has arrived! The name, ‘Lent’, comes from the ‘lengthening’ of days, the longer days, the warmer Spring sunshine, new life – and hopefully through these forty days of Lent, we, too, can come alive through deeper prayer, self-denial and fasting, and through reaching out to others in love, especially towards those who are poor. You might like to try the Lenten RAK Nomination Challenge (stands for Random Acts of Kindness). There are some inspiring Lenten blogs on the Lifeteen website. Check out our new prayer page, Stepping out in Faith. A great way of having a good old Spring Clean is to go to Confession and on Wednesday 16 April, from 6-8pm, every church in the diocese will be holding a service, The Light is On, to give you this opportunity.
Beginning on Sunday 30 March, our Castlerigg-based youth group will be beginning. Aimed at High School and Sixth Form students, we will be meeting on the Last Sunday of each month (hence the name of the group, Last Sunday) from 6.30-8.30pm for food, friendship, fun and faith. The group is especially for young people across Cumbria, many of whom don’t get the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful resource we have here and to meet our lovely team. Also, we would like to remind you of our forthcoming Easter Retreat (17-20 April 2014), a long weekend with all your favourite Castlerigg team, sharing good times together and celebrating our faith. Please fill in your forms and return them to us as soon as possible.
We also want you to know that our Lourdes pilgimage is now full and already the youth section has had its first meeting in Lancaster. We have over 85 young people joining us for the summer pilgrimage. Looking further ahead, CYMFed are organising a Flame 2 event in Wembley in March 2015. Please click here for a reminder of what a fantastic event the first one was two years ago and keep an eye out for details. And looking even further ahead, pencil in World Youth Day at the end of July 2016 in Krakow in Poland.
Gap Year Opportunities
Applications for next year’s gap year team are open. If you are enthusiastic, love working with young people, and desire to grow in confidence in yourself and in your faith, acquiring many new skills and experiences, please email or write to us. We will then send you an application form. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2014.
The fifty years of the Youth Service gives us much to celebrate and our programme of refurbishment continues thanks to the generosity of so many people. As you know, already work has been completed on insulating, re-slating and re-roofing much of the building and those who have visited recently would have noticed new chairs in the main lounge, upholstered chairs and benches in some of the group rooms, new artwork and frames on the walls, a new kitchen floor enabling us to receive our 5* rating, and a new music room with a brand new keyboard. In addition, several of the bedrooms have been re-decorated, re-painted, and re-carpeted, and brought to life with new curtains and lamp shades. We are hoping that the work of improvement will continue with new shower and toilet facilities and new accommodation for our current team. Our 50th Anniversary is a time to look to the future and to upgrade the building so that we can ensure the viability of our work over the next half-century. We would love you to look over our proposals for the Manor Makeover and we are asking you to support the work through considering a donation yourselves.
