Taize 11-20 August 2012

Taizé is a little village in Burgundy in the East of France. It has a community of monks at its heart, all from different countries and backgrounds. It was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz in response to the material and spiritual poverty of the Second World War. In a world riven by strife, he wanted to explore how we could live in peace, reconciliation, and simplicity. Little did he know at the time that he would set in motion events which have transformed Taizé into an important site of pilgrimage. Each year over 100,000 young people from around the globe make their way to Taizé for a week’s experience. Through living and working together, camping in fields, serving each other, talking to each other, and sharing the prayer times together, Taizé allows you to discover some of the most important lessons of life and learn to encounter people and God in new and surprising ways.

Rachel Turley, who went a few years ago, shares her impressions of the visit: “Taize is such a fantastic opportunity that you shouldn’t miss out on. It is such a beautiful and peaceful place in the middle of France where you can take some time out of your busy life to spend reflecting, making lots of new friends and having a really great time. It is really hard trying to describe to somebody what the Taize experience is all about. It is an experience that changed my life completely. The concept is simple: you spend time in prayer and explore different Scriptures and talking about your beliefs with young people from all over the world. Meeting different people from all over the world was one of the things that made my experience so amazing. Suddenly coming from where no young people I knew have faith I was somewhere where there were thousands of people who had faith and wanted to share their experiences with me. I am still in touch with some people I met in my small group even three years on. The food and amenities are quite basic, but this is all part and parcel of what makes Taize the amazing experience that is. The place is beautiful and the people are incredible, there is such a buzzing atmosphere. I promise that if you take this opportunity you will come back filled with so much love and life from the Lord”.
