Last night, Castlerigg hosted Rory Stewart OBE who spoke about his adventures in Afghanistan. Rory is a celebrated academic, author, diplomat and is currently defending his seat in Parliament where he is chair of the Defence Select Committee. Between 2000-02, Rory walked 6000 miles on foot through the rural reaches of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, affording him unique insights into this part of the world. Rory shared with his audience some of his fascinating experiences: the people he met and the hospitality he received, the ancient civilisation he discovered, and the impact of the wars. The occasion provided a backdrop to promote our ongoing fundraising campaign. We had a wonderful clarinet ensemble who played through the evening. As many of you know, the Manor had a major re-fit over the last summer, and our efforts to cover the costs for these necessary developments continue.
